Wonder Woman: Things Abbey Likes

Wonder Woman is strong, feminine, and she embodies the warrior spirit. Her battle for gender quality, love, justice, and peace have made her a feminist symbol across generations and countries. And she wears a badass outfit that is both tough and feminine. PS Lynda Carter is a babe.

To be honest, I knew few things about Wonder Woman before my birthday this year when Nikki put me in her Wonder Woman costume and gave me a history lesson. But lately there’s been tons of talk about her creation and the unconventional relationship her character stemmed from, which is perfect timing seeing as I revisited the costume for Halloween.

Wonder Woman’s creator William Moulton Marston lived in a ménage à trios, fathering children with two women and living together as one family. Even after Marston’s death, his two wives stayed living together and even shared a bed until their deaths. It was these to women that shaped his vision of Wonder Woman.

The bondage, sex parties, and BDSM are making headlines now, but  But his unconventional relationship not only lead to a fulfilling sex life, his respect for his partners led to the creation of a figure who’s still ahead of our times.

A press release explained, “ ‘Wonder Woman’ was conceived by Dr. Marston to set up a standard among children and young people of strong, free, courageous womanhood; to combat the idea that women are inferior to men, and to inspire girls to self-confidence and achievement in athletics, occupations and professions monopolized by men” because “the only hope for civilization is the greater freedom, development and equality of women in all fields of human activity.”

Or, more simply: “Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world.”

I love women, and men. I especially love when the two come together and celebrate each other.
