Robotic Prostitutes in the Near Future?

University of Wellington professors think robotic prostitutes could provide a solution to the sex trade’s problems. In their paper “Robots, Men and Sex Tourism“, Ian Yeoman and Michelle Mars explore how robotic prostitutes could cut back on the instances of STDs, and human trafficking.

These “tourism futurists” predict that by 2050, Amsterdam’s red light district will be filled with android prostitutes, made completely of bacteria-resistent fibre to guarantee no STDs will be transferred between consumers.

The idea is great, less diseases, less children being exploited. But with a $10,000 estimated price tag, I can’t see this being common. Or justified by wives and girlfriends of men.

Possibilities like designing robots to appeal to people with specific wants (like minors) could help slow down the booming sex trade. But people will still want the old fashioned human experience.

Would you use a sex robot, or would you rather stick to having sex with humans?

The future will bring a whole new meaning to “sex machine”.
